Thommo represented Australia in the 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games in the 90 kgs weight class and placed fourth.
He held the Australian Heavyweight Amateur Wrestling Championship for well over a decade.
His father, Keith Thompson, also held the Heavyweight title along with our grandfather, William James Thompson.
Alan was a third generation wrestler.
Alan was seriously assaulted in an incident at Bankstown Court when the offender attempted to assault the Magistrate. Alan was the Court Officer on duty and was struck with the microphone stand and suffered horrific lacerations to his head. He still managed to arrest the offender despite his injuries. He suffered from headaches constantly after that incident.
